Winter = Zillertal
The whole of the Zillertal valley is one giant winter wonderland.
Zell – the historic and geographical heart of the Zillertal – is the best base for accessing the action-packed Zillertal Arena ski area.
Between the 166 kilometres of slopes and 49 modern lifts, there are plenty of other exciting activities to be discovered, apart from downhill skiing: the Arena Coaster, a floodlit toboggan run, 14 km of cross-country skiing tracks, the Arena Hot-Zone Snowpark and half-pipe for snowboarders, the free ski shuttle bus, ski and snowboard schools, an ice-skating rink, Alpine curling rink, indoor tennis courts... and, last but not least, the nostalgic Zillertalbahn steam train experience.
But if all this seems a little overwhelming, you can simply head off on a beautiful winter walk through the sparkling snowy landscape.
Zell for kids – children’s ski schools and family ski area
Zell am Ziller offers three ski schools for beginners with a wide variety of services. These include a daily pick-up service for children, launching balloons, snow sailing, snow tubing, a kids’ ski disco and a fun kindergarten at Skischule Lechner.
We also recommend the Gerlosstein ski area, which is particularly family and child-friendly. Skiing and tobogganing are a real pleasure there, away from the crowds and without any long queues at the lifts. The Gerlosstein-Tandempendelbahn lift will take you directly to the ski area from Hainzenberg (between Zell and Gerlos).
A wealth of options for non-downhill skiers, away from the slopes
Covering a total of 14 km, the fantastic cross-country skiing tracks in Zell are sure to delight any cross-country enthusiasts. Cross-country skiing courses and equipment hire are available for beginners.
Or you can explore the snowy winter landscape on a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride.
Freizeitpark Zell also offers a wide choice of leisure activities in winter with three tennis courts, a four-lane bowling alley and a large ice-skating rink.
Or why not try snowshoeing? You can book guided tours – with equipment included on request – through Aktivzentrum Zillertal!
Day trips are available on request!
The fantastic Arena Coaster is also open in winter with its jumps, tight corners, waves and 540° descending loop.
Tobogganing in the Zillertal
The Gerlossteinrodelbahn on the Hainzenberg is the longest toboggan run in the Zillertal, covering 7 km. Take the Gerlossteinbahn lift near Zell up to 1,650 m and then speed back down again. Rustic inns offer inviting places to stop off along the way. The run is floodlit until 1 am and makes for a great adventure, especially at night.
